Why structured data matters more than ever
Traditional SEO shows Google what pages exist. Structured data tells every engine (Google, Bing, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) what those pages mean. It's the fastest single change most sites can make to improve AI visibility.
Schema markup and JSON-LD
What is schema markup and why does it matter?+
Schema markup is structured data you add to a page in a machine-readable format, usually JSON-LD, that states plainly what the page is: a product with a price, an article with an author, a set of questions and answers. Search engines use it to build rich results, and AI engines use it to extract facts without having to infer them from your layout. It is the cheapest way to remove ambiguity about what your page means.
Which schema types should I add first?+
Organization on your homepage, because it is what search and AI engines use to resolve your brand as an entity, especially with sameAs links to your social profiles. After that, match the type to the page: FAQPage on support and pricing pages, Article on blog posts, Product on product pages, HowTo on tutorials. Breadcrumb and WebSite are quick sitewide wins once the page-level types are in place.
Where do I paste the JSON-LD?+
Inside the <head> of the page it describes, as a <script type="application/ld+json"> block. The generator outputs the full script tag, so you can paste it directly. If your CMS makes head injection awkward, footer or body placement works fine: Google reads JSON-LD anywhere in the document, and <head> is convention rather than requirement. Use one block per schema type, and only on the page the markup actually describes.
Does auto mode read my page, or does it infer fields?+
Both, in that order. Auto mode fetches your live URL and reads the real HTML, first running a compatibility check to confirm the page matches the schema type you picked. A language model then extracts the field values from that fetched content. So the values are grounded in what is actually on your page rather than invented, but the mapping from page content to schema fields is a model interpretation, not a direct DOM read. Review the fields before you publish. Auto mode is available for Article, FAQ, HowTo and Product; the other four types are manual entry.
Will this validate in Google's Rich Results Test?+
The output follows schema.org types and required properties, so a completed form produces markup that parses and validates. Two caveats. If you leave a required field empty, the builder emits an obvious REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_... placeholder rather than dropping the property, and those must be filled in before you publish or validation will fail. And validating is not the same as earning a rich result: Google decides that separately based on content quality and eligibility. Always run your final markup through the Rich Results Test on the live URL.
